Stunning New Report: Now track user level data in Google Analytics without passing a UserID

Just came across a new report in Google Analytics called “User Explorer” today. It is available in beta for some free & premium users. I took a test drive and here is my first impression on the same. It is one of the finest additions to Google Analytics after introducing Cohorts, LTV & Postbacks.
“User Exporer” report tracks each user by a unique client ID (GA’s internal ID) and then map user’s all activities within the App/Website. This will now allow App/Site owners to go deep into analyzing users’ behavior, track their paths inside the App/Site and filter them based on their In-App activities.

Some features of this report:
- You get to see the acquisition channel of the user
- Sessions by a user and Revenue generated
- Day Wise User Journey
- Filter user based on App visit/Goals/Ecommerce/Event
Day Wise App Journey:

You can now see a user’s detailed step by step journey in the App and what action was performed along with the time stamp. Click on each action and you will be able to see further details as shown below:

As you can see, we can check the revenue generated along with transaction ID (which is generated by our system so matching it with the user is easy) along with specific pay actions. For example, in the above case, we know that this user did a revenue of Rs.2000 and paid using her saved card.

And that’s not it, you can even create segments (unlimited options available) and go deep into a specific set of users.
How can this report be beneficial to product managers?
- Better user level understanding
- Debugging the transaction level issues — PM can search by a transaction ID and see user’s full journey
- Improve product UX by doing a sample study
- Segment whales, occasional users, freeloaders and create a better product/pricing strategy
I can’t wait to make full use of this report in coming days and unlock all the benefits.
I will be happy to hear your feedback on this. Feel free to comment here or tag me on twitter @deepakabbot or mail me at dabbot@gmail.com
